OCLC Group Services for Wisconsin
Group Services is a package of services for a group of libraries focused on resource sharing. The heart of the package is a Group (union) Catalog created from records already cataloged in WorldCat by members of the Group. Combined with unlimited access to the full range of cataloging and interlibrary loan products and services, Group Services allows users to search locally, regionally, group-wide or worldwide from a single interface that integrates with local library systems.
For Wisconsin, Group Services is being implemented in phases. Phase 1 began March 1, 2006 with the introduction of our group catalog — BADGERCAT. BadgerCat is a special presentation of OCLC WorldCat that creates a Wisconsin view of WorldCat with the holdings of nearly 500 Wisconsin libraries. Because BadgerCat was created and is being funded by a subset of Wisconsin libraries, only their authorized users can search the database. There is no Guest access at this time. LONG TERM GOALS (revised 7.14.06)
Create a virtual union catalog for the State of Wisconsin that is connected to libraries across the region, nation and world
Facilitate the efficient discovery of library materials
Enhance resource sharing
Allow formal and informal consortia, based on geography, library type, mission, etc. to create virtual union catalogs tailored to specific needs
Provide improved services to libraries and their patrons by leveraging existing investments in the OCLC cooperative
Improve cost predictability for libraries with multi-year agreements with OCLC for Basic and Premium Services.
Objectives—Phase 1; January 2006

Include 70% of the target libraries as Phase 1 participants for the Group Catalog "Target libraries" defined as those libraries with unlimited access to FirstSearch WorldCat as of July 2005. This includes 77 libraries.

- Finalize pricing for Premium Services:
WebDewey, ContentDM, ILLiad, QuestionPoint 24x7
(Objective achieved; By start of Phase 2 finalized pricing for ContentDM and QuestionPoint) - Increase user base for WebDewey, ContentDM & QuestionPoint 24x7 by 20% over FY06
- Add any Phase 1 target libraries that did not join in January
- Add 70% of the
libraries targeted for Phase 2 (30 libraries)
(We added 11 libraries in Phase 2 and reached 70% of the combined Phase 1 & 2 target libraries)
Objectives—Phase 3; January 2007 (revised 7.06)
- Add the remaining 18 academic libraries to reach 100% of this population
- Add remaining public library systems with emphasis on cataloging for
all system members
- Achieve the critical mass necessary to be able to offer a low-cost Group Services package to school libraries
- Achieve the critical mass necessary to be able to reduce the FY08 predicted WorldCat price for Phase 1 libraries by 3%
