WiLS Hour: WLA recap; Workflow Analysis;
Collection Development and Resource Sharing; Drupal in Your Library (recording)
Miss any of the WLA sessions? Come to the November 3 WiLSHour
for a recap of presentations by WiLSians Eric Robinson, Mark Beatty,
and Jane Richard.
Eric was on a panel discussion on "Collection Development and
Resource Sharing," which involved academic and public librarians sharing
their thoughts on collaboration between the two areas.
Discussion topics included: the acceleration and transition from print
to electronic collections, the expansion of library partnerships and
redefinition of the library marketplace for the licensing of electronic
resources, trends of interlibrary loan supplementing an institution's
own collection, effects of decreasing collection budgets and evolving
patron expectations toward immediate material access.
Mark was also on a panel discussion, "Drupal in Your Library." What's Drupal?
According to Wikipedia, it's a "free and open source ... Content Management System (CMS)"
It is used as a "back end" system for many different types of websites -- including
library Web sites! During this panel discussion, early adopters
from several types of libraries related their experiences -- in the words
of one, it is not the easiest to use, but we like it.
Jane co-presented "Public Library System Technical Services
in the 21st Century," and 44 of us broke into 4 smaller groups to discuss
these broad topics:
* The OCLC influence (mulitple versus single symbols, etc.)
* Quality control (training, policies, versus costs)
* Local cataloging practice (what gets special treatment, how to document,
how much time does it take, related to quality control) Several consistent
themes sprang up through the groups, regardless of public and academic
or practitioners and administrators.

WiLS Hour: Community Managers' Panel (recording)
What can WiLS do to help your library better serve its patrons?
This is the mantra that is the driving principle behind WiLS new Community Managers - library specialists
focused on your library needs and what WiLS can do to help better serve your patrons. This panel session will elaborate
on how the Community Managers are hoping to start a continuing dialog with its members to not only help them
improve upon their libraries collections and services, but to collaborate on new member driven services.
We hope that you will join us online on October 15 at 2pm to further discuss how you can become a part
of the Community Manager experience.

WorldCat Local Quick Start with Mark Beatty (recording)
Level One members will be charged $25, all others are charged $55/site login.
We'll talk about: What is WorldCat Local "quick start"?
WorldCat Local "quick start" provides a single search result that delivers your library's resources and
those of the world's libraries. It is now included in a subscription to WorldCat on FirstSearch at no additional charge.
That's right IT'S FREE, if you already subscribe to WorldCat FirstSearch.
This is the first step to the first Web-scale, cooperative library service. WorldCat Local connects users' search experience
with library management systems--today, that means WorldCat, your catalog, local availability and resource sharing.
What do you get?
WorldCat Local "quick start" offers libraries:
- Display of a local library's holdings first in search results, followed
by the holdings of other WorldCat libraries - Local branding of a WorldCat search box, URL and user interface
- Links to an existing OpenURL resolver for access from the over 58 million
article citations
in WorldCat.org to the online full text to which libraries subscribe - Integration of existing OCLC delivery/interlibrary loan services
(WorldCat Resource Sharing, ILLiad) - Interoperability with a single local library catalog for real-time item availability information and place holds
- Access to the same social networking tools available on WorldCat.org
Attend the WiLS Hour if you're interested in giving "quick start" a try.

Business or Pleasure?: Practical Social Networking for Professional Purposes
with Andrew Burkhardt (recording)
The ways to use social networking services are as varied as the
different types of relationships we have. From a perfect stranger to a
close friend - from a colleague to people sharing similar interests,
social networking can serve many needs. This webinar will discuss ways
to use social networking tools to create and solidify relationships with
patrons and library professionals. It will address both weak (twitter)
and strong (facebook, LinkedIn?) connections, how both can be
advantageous, and how you can use these connections to further your
professional goals.
