Electronic Delivery
Odyssey
Odyssey as a part of ILLiad: Odyssey was designed with low cost, ease of use, and network security in mind. The software is a client/server application which allows the processing application to be split off from the delivery service function. This controls costs by allowing sites to expand by just adding the processing functionality to additional machines. It helps with network security by allowing the delivery service function of the software to be run on a server/workstation that may or may not be located in the ILL office.
A few features are:
- Send and receive electronic documents
- Review, insert, delete, rotate, crop and deskew images either sending or receiving
- Send black, grayscale, color, or a combination of formats in the same document
- Uses standard Twain drivers
- Automatic conversion of incoming files to PDF
- Automatic posting of files to a specific file or folder
- Automatic printing of incoming files
- Send and receive documents between other Odyssey users or OCLC ILLiad sites
This software is quickly becoming the dominant form for sending and receiving articles. Many ARL institutions report sending and receiving over 60% of their articles via Odyssey since the dominance of Ariel has gone down.

Odyssey standalone: If you don't use ILLiad but you are interested in receiving and sending via Odyssey, there is a free version of Odyssey. Once installed you can begin to notify your lenders of your Odyssey IP by changing the constant data in your requests.

Problems:
- Many libraries have had difficulties with downloading Ariel 4.1 and 4.1.1. If you purchased and have attempted to download 4.1 but have been unable to set it up, please contact WiLS tech staff and we will see what we can do. Email to awenzel @ wils.wisc.edu.
- Many libraries who receive documents from lenders who have 4.1, but they as borrowers have Ariel 3.4 report that documents come through as blank.
E-DOC
E-DOC is a WiLS developed software for networking scanning stations, and hosting of pdf documents. Any library that WiLS acts as a lender for always has the option to have their documents sent to them as a hosted pdf for 14 days. This has been a successful means of delivering articles to libraries that do not have Ariel or Odyssey. Your patron can receive notification directly when an E-Doc is available; you must indicate this in the body of a request, whether it is sent via OCLC or through our Web request service. This is done by using mailto: in the BORROWING NOTES field. The mailto: has the following format:
mailto:recip@anywhere.edu (single recipient)
mailto:recip1@anywhere.edu,recip2@anywhere.edu (multiple recipients)
Please note that the format must be adhered to exactly, or the request will not be properly processed. This is because all E-Doc handling is by computer program, and computer programs are notoriously literal and stupid about dealing with variations in format.
Important rules for mailto:
- There must be no spaces anywhere within the mailto: information.
- At the end of the mailto: information, there must be at least one space separating the mailto: from any other text in the field.
- Multiple e-mail addresses must be separated by a single comma.
If your institution uses WiLS or OCLC symbol GZM as a lender and you are interested in having your documents sent via email, please contact the WiLS scanning lead at erobinson @ wils.wisc.edu
