Creating an IntraLibrary ILL System, Using the OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing Patron System

South Central Library System ILL staff and Mark Beatty collaborated on creating web pages detailing exactly how a library can use OCLC ILL, FirstSearch and the Patron Request features of both to facilitate member libraries, or branch libraries, initiating requests that can go to either a clearinghouse, or enter the OCLC ILL system automatically. Those libraries can see the status of their requests too; but they only need to be able to search and request using FirstSearch WorldCat. There's no ILL training required.

The clearinghouse library establishes the ILL policies which are enacted by utilizing the requesting tools within the OCLC ILL system. Check out the web site for full details at: lepton.wils.wisc.edu/oclcillsetup.

If you'd like further details on how this system works, how to set it up, or to test drive a version using the WiLS training accounts, contact Mark Beatty at mbeatty at wils.wisc.edu or 608.265.5719.

LVIS—Libraries Very Interested in Sharing

LVIS represents the first nationwide OCLC no charge Group Access Capability (GAC) agreement. LVIS, which was established in 1993, began out of a shared goal of the Illinois State Library and the Missouri Library Network Corporation (MLNC) to encourage and provide greater opportunities for no charge resource sharing throughout the midwest region. During the first year, LVIS members included over 200 multitype libraries in Illinois and Missouri. During 1994 over seventy Iowa libraries were added to LVIS. In 1995-1996, with the nationwide expansion of LVIS, multitype libraries from all over the country can take advantage of the many benefits of this exceptional resource sharing program.

How to Join LVIS...to participate you need to:

  1. agree to lend monographic items to LVIS members at no charge
  2. agree to provide photocopies of up to 30 pages per bibliographic citation to LVIS members at no charge.

Use the LVIS Form—print and complete a form (PDF or Word ), then fax it to Mark Beatty at 608.262.6067.  Libraries outside Wisconsin should contact their regional network office

Other LVIS Members

When you join LVIS, be sure to add LVIS to the :AFFILIATION: field in your constant data record(s) for interlibrary loan workforms. To display LVIS holdings when searching for items to borrow, type in dhlvis or build custom holdings groups and paths.

OCLC also provides OCLC ILL Policies Directory PDF.

Switching to ILL non-supplier status:

If you need to switch to "non-supplier" status on OCLC ILL during upcoming staff shortages or vacations, you can do so from within the Policies Directory. The link is available on the Unit Summary, Quick View, and Information screens. As a non-supplier, your library's OCLC symbol appears in lower-case and other libraries may not use your symbol when creating their lender strings.

Recommendations if you switch to ILL non-supplier:

  1. Change to non-supplier a week or so before you HAVE to be unavailable for ILL. If your symbol has already been included in active requests before the non-supplier change, you could get items in your message file that need attention. Please check your message file even after you go to non-supplier status.
  2. Continue to check the MF regularly and automatically answer "No" to any new requests that show up. Use reasons for "No" 23 "requested delivery services not supported" or 24 "preferred delivery time not possible" if you want to track these kinds of requests.
