Library to patron: Ariel
Ariel allows you to send articles to your patron either through an email
attachment or by posting the article the web and sending the patron an
email with the URL. You can deliver articles that you received via Ariel,
or you can scan articles from your own collection to deliver in this
way.
Library to Library: Ariel
If libraries are not interested in desktop delivery to their patrons, they
can use Ariel to electronically send photocopies to another library using
Ariel. Ariel transmissions are faster and clearer than faxing and incur no
long-distance phone charges.
Equipment
In addition to the software, libraries require Internet access,
a sufficiently powerful PC and compatible scanner and printer to run
the document transmission system.
Document Quality
Ariel software has set the standard at libraries around
the world for high-resolution document transmission. The document transmission
system adjusts to handle both graphic and gray-scale materials, prints
variable-resolution images on plain paper in a variety of sizes and works
with a wide range of printers and scanners. Ariel software has the ability
to import and print documents created at any resolution. It can receive
electronic delivery documents sent from both library ILL departments
and commercial systems.
Incorporates an enhanced internal document
viewer enabling library staff to preview material as they scan and receive
it.
Allows library staff to monitor
the status of materials sent and see what is still pending receipt,
sets the intervals when Ariel will check for incoming items and
allows staff to see the real-time status of incoming Ariel e-mail
and items sent via FTP.
Enables staff members to select
and configure a scanner from the menu.
Conforms to Windows 95 application
and set-up guidelines.
Institutions with Firewalls should contact Ariel tech support about compatibility
with Ariel version 3 at 800-537-7546.
Ariel
Q: Under what circumstances is Ariel a good choice?
A: The best reason to choose Ariel is if you plan to supply documents
electronically. Note that Ariel essentially requires a PC virtually fulltime in order to operate.
Q: What is the advantage of using the Ariel Print-Only product?
A: We don't believe that Ariel's print-only product is a good choice.
However, some people view Ariel as the standard method for transmitting
ILL electronic documents via the Internet.
Ariel is not recommended as a receive-only option because documents
can only be received when Ariel is running, and Ariel requires virtual
full-time use of a PC. On the other hand, it is advantageous
to have electronic documents delivered directly to a single PC, if you
do not plan to deliver directly to patrons. In other words, Ariel offers
greater automation of the delivery process than the WiLS E-Doc service.
