Featured Speaker

WiLS is pleased to bring OCLC's Renee Register to Madison to talk about a new project using and enriching bibliographic data from publishers and vendors. ONIX stands for Online Information eXchange, a standard format used by publishers to distribute electronic information about their materials. The OCLC ONIX project will explore how this data can be used for the early (and automated) addition of new title metadata to WorldCat, with enhanced quality and consistency.

Read more about the project on the OCLC website: www.oclc.org/de/de/productworks/nextgencataloging.htm

Two Concurrent Afternoon Programs
____________________________________
Panel discussion of the Library of Congress Working Group on the Future of Bibliographic Control report, "On the Record"(pdf)

Join us for a discussion of this landmark report and the response from the library community. We'll hear reactions and perspectives from panelists with varied backgrounds: Michael Cohen, Head, Copy Cataloging & Catalog Maintenance Units at UW-Madison General Library System; Amy Gannaway, Cataloging and PAC Support Specialist at SCLS LINK; Allison Kaplan, Associate Faculty Associate at UW-SLIS; and Deb Shapiro, Instructional Program Manager at UW-Madison SLIS. Bring your comments and questions for what promises to be a lively discussion.

DEMCO Hands-on Book Repair Workshop
DEMCO presents a practical, hands-on workshop where participants learn and practice basic repairs for both hard and softbound books. Emphasis is placed on becoming familiar with techniques and materials for economic in-house repair of materials that must be available for frequent use. Additionally, protective measures, which will extend the life of new materials, will be demonstrated and discussed. Long-term preservation of archival materials will not be addressed. This workshop is useful for anyone involved in repair of library materials and participants will gain skills that can be shared with other staff or volunteers.

Bring a pair of scissors, two hardcover books to practice on and any other book you are having problems with. Participation includes a book repair kit ($6.50+ value). Please register for the Peer Council meeting with the DEMCO workshop. (All Peer Council attendees are welcome to one complimentary book repair kit, which includes a Book Protection and Repair Guide, a plastic bone older and more, in a "Readitude" plastic tote.)

What is Peer Council?
Peer Council is what other entities often call a user group. In Wisconsin, it is important to the WiLS member libraries that the aspect of equal participation by all be emphasized and always apparent with the use of the word "peer." The Peer Council meetings are an opportunity to talk with your peers and appreciate WiLS member library differences as well as similarities. WiLS, along with the elected Peer Council officers, plan these meetings.
