Ann's program is titled The Evolving Cataloging Department at University Library, Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) and will be presented in the morning.

Hear how IUPUI's University Library cataloging team has evolved from a traditional one, consisting of several professional and paraprofessional staff, cataloging print materials, to a streamlined staff of 2.5 professionals and 3.5 paraprofessionals, creating metadata for digital items in the digital library in addition to cataloging the traditional print materials.

Ann has a Master of Music from Louisiana State University, and a MLS from Indiana University. Her research interests include library history, reading history, and print culture, as well as cataloging issues, and she has published articles and presented papers on historical libraries and reading communities.

Alane's afternoon session is titled Their Perceptions, Our Reality: The OCLC Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources Report.

The OCLC Environmental Scan was published in early 2004 and provided a high level view of significant issues and trends impacting libraries and OCLC. OCLC's latest report, Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources was released two years after the Scan, and provides a different perspective on many of the trends and issues identified by presenting data collected in a Harris Interactive survey of 3,348 "information consumers" in Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.

"The findings indicate that information consumers view libraries as places to borrow print books, but they are unaware of the rich electronic content they can access through libraries."

The findings and responses from the online survey afford library staff an opportunity to learn more about:

  • Library use
  • Awareness and use of library electronic resources
  • Search engines, the library and the librarian
  • The "Library" brand

In the first part of this session Alane will present findings from the report, as well as the implications of changing user behaviors and expectations. The second part of this session will be an opportunity for attendees to discuss what libraries could and should do to define and market their relevant place in an "infosphere" crowded with an increasing number of content producers, providers and consumers.

Alane's responsibilities at OCLC fall into the "other duties as required" category as most of her work is special projects for the VP of Marketing and Library Services. She joined OCLC in 1997 as a sales representative and in March 2003, after working in sales, marketing and business development, she resigned from OCLC.  OCLC's President and CEO, Jay Jordan, recruited her back in June 2003 to work on the OCLC Environmental Scan which was published in January 2004.  She rejoined OCLC full-time in May 2004. She has published articles, spoken to many groups, and is one of five OCLC contributors to the "It's All Good" blog. Before joining OCLC, Alane was an academic librarian at the University of Calgary and the University of Alaska Fairbanks for 12 years. She holds a B.A. in English Literature and Classical Civilizations, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, and an MLIS, from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia. She was born in London, England, is a Canadian citizen and is married to an American. If you look at her profile on Blogger, you will see she's a Virgo, born in the Year of the Monkey and likes mystery novels, Italian wine and food, cars, and gardening.

What is Peer Council?
Peer Council is what other entities often call a user group. In Wisconsin, it is important to the WiLS member libraries that the aspect of equal participation by all be emphasized and always apparent with the use of the word "peer." The Peer Council meetings are an opportunity to talk with your peers and appreciate WiLS member library differences as well as similarities. WiLS, along with the elected Peer Council officers, plan these meetings.
