Connexion Editing Techniques Sessions

May 13, 2008: Authorities and Identities
with Victor Gorodinsky and Jane Richard (recording)

In this session designed mainly for catalogers, NOT just authoritarians, Victor Gorodinsky, cataloger at UW-Madison Memorial Library, will give a whirlwind tour of authorities, authority records, and authority control. The session will include information on how to search for authority records and how to interpret them. In addition, Victor will give an overview of how he establishes new authorities as a cataloger at a NACO- and SACO-certified institution. Questions and participation are highly encouraged.

In the second part of the session, we'll show how good authority control helps patrons. We'll also look at how authorities, in combination with FRBR concepts, have been leveraged for use in the innovative new project, WorldCat Identities.

March 11, 2008:
Local Holdings Offline Product (formerly known as SULOP)

with Jane and Nichole (recording)

For libraries entering local holdings data manually through the Connexion browser interface, or who have or will submit their MFHDs to OCLC for an automated batchload to WorldCat. Individual libraries can order a tab delimited file of all of the local holdings they currently have in WorldCat. Once produced, the tab delimited file will be available for download and can be imported into a spreadsheet package. There is no charge for this report.

At this session, we’ll look at the order process and an actual file and how to manipulate it, along with how libraries might use this information. If time allows, we'll also look at local holdings records themselves and give an overview of how to maintain.

A Quick Reference guide is available online at www.oclc.org/us/en/support/documentation/localholdings/offlineproduct/lhm_offlineproduct_quickref.pdf and covers the order process, how to download the file, and information on how to import the file into Microsoft Office Excel.
________

February 12
, 2008: Working With Local Files in the Connexion Client
with Nichole Fromm, see Nichole's slides or recording view with IE.

Local files can be used to save bibliographic and authority records, to
create and store bibliographic and authority constant data, to set
actions on records, and enter searches for batch processing. Local files
are located on one workstation or can be located on a network drive for
shared access. Effective use of local files can increase the efficiency
of just about any cataloging workflow.

In this session, we'll cover:
• Creating and deleting local files
• Configuring and using batch processes
• Exporting records from a local file
• Backing up and restoring data
• Basic troubleshooting

Read more about Local Files on the OCLC website

December 11, 2007: Local Holdings Maintenance(see Jane's powerpoint slides)
OCLC Local Holdings helps you maintain accurate, current holdings information in WorldCat, particularly for serials, but it can be used for any kind of library material. Besides providing your library's exact holdings, you can indicate item-specific copying and lending policies and scope of coverage, making resource sharing staff very happy. In the December Connexion Editing Techniques, we'll go through the process of creating and editing local holdings through the browser interface. And, if you miss SULOP (the offline product), there'll be a sneak preview of its replacement, called Local Holdings Offline Product (LHOP). OCLC has not yet set a rollout date, but the format of the file has been established-- individual libraries will be able to order a tab-delimited file of all the local holdings they have currently in WorldCat, with data elements from the bib record and the LHR. Read more about Local Holdings Maintenance on the OCLC website—tutorials, quick reference, tag charts and more

(see Janes powerpoint slides)
There are 2 choices for Connexion interface, one Windows-based (referred to as the client) and one web-based (called the browser). Both offer powerful searching and editing features, and the online cataloging save file is shared by both services—an institution isn't limited to using one interface or the other. Learn about the browser's other features in this hour-long session. www.oclc.org/connexion/interface/browser/default.htm

September 12: REVISED: Constant data, macros, text strings.
Let the computer do the drudge work of repetetive keying, as well as saving yourself from the worry of spelling and tagging errors. This session will go over the application of these tools, and locating the documentation for creating them. As time permits, Jane will demonstrate the steps involved. www.oclc.org/support/documentation/connexion/client

May 9, 2006: Connexion 1.60 Preview
View statistical data summarized at the institution level and divided by authorization number and interface (Connexion browser and Connexion client). There are two views for the reports: Usage Report, which summarizes the activity into broad categories, and All Activity, which shows all available statistics. The statistical categories include: WorldCat Searches, WorldCat Browses, Update Existing/New WorldCat Records, Produce Existing/New WorldCat Records, WorldCat Exports, plus many more. Check them out here: www.stats.oclc.org/cusp/nav
Use any OCLC authorization and password from your institution.

March 14, 2006: Mixed bag features of Connexion client 1.50: including accession list printing, spellchecker, and settings available in options. (WAS Constant data) In this abbreviated session, we'll go over how to use some of the new features in Connexion 1.50.  (Jane's powerpoint slides )

February 14, 2006: Control Headings
: A brief overview and demonstration of the control headings feature in OCLC Connexion, which is available in both the client and the browser versions. This lets you link a heading in a bibliographic record or workform in WorldCat or the online bibliographic save file directly to a corresponding Library of Congress authority record, if available. Once you control a heading (and replace the master record), Connexion automatically changes the heading if the linked authority record changes.
As time permits, we'll discuss tricky scenarios and questions of workflow. (Jane's powerpoint slides )

January 10, 2006: Batch processing with Connexion client 1.50
(Jane's powerpoint slides )
As an alternative to interactive searching and processing record actions, use the new and improved method of batch processing in Connexion.
•Automatically search WorldCat and LC authority file, and the records are delivered to your local file
•Perform online record actions, create labels and export, all using the batch process
•Search keys and action commands are stored until you are ready to have Connexion process them
•Run processes on multiple local files at once
• New option! Shortcut to batch set or delete holdings by OCLC number without downloading records
If you can't make the session, it will be archived for 2 weeks; OCLC also offers an online tutorial. See the list of tutorials here:

Books on ScienceDirect give users a broader perspective. The availability of quality monographs published in all fields of science, in addition to handbooks and reference works, offers significantly expanded full-text information. In addition to an extensive range of authoritative reference works, handbooks, book series and a quarter of the world's STM journal articles on ScienceDirect, 2007 sees a launch of another approximately 4,000 Books online. These Books cover a wide range of scientific disciplines, and will be fully integrated with the existing book and journal information on ScienceDirect. Approximately 500-750 new Books will be added online each year following the 2007 launch. This means about 50 new Books will be added to ScienceDirect every month, making its coverage even broader and up-to-date

May 10, 2007: WorldCat Registry Services
with Mark Beatty Attend this WiLS Hour to learn about and see a demo of OCLCs new WorldCat Registry, an authoritative single source for institutional metadata. As the world's largest directory of libraries, the WorldCat Registry provides a comprehensive, extensible and secure Web platform for managing and disseminating the data about your library. The metadata about your institution itself is becoming increasingly important: its identity, electronic services, relationships, staff contacts and other pertinent data that informs the processes and systems driving your entire organization. OCLC has automatically created WorldCat Registry profiles for its member libraries and pre-populated those profiles with existing data. The WiLS Hour will show how you can update and utilize this tool.

With WorldCat Registry, you can:
• Build a free profile that centralizes information sharing.
• Share the profile via a special encoded link.
• Get greater Internet visibility for your collection and services.
• Automate vendor interactions.
• WorldCat Registry helps your institution eliminate redundancy of effort, allows your service providers to ensure continuity and quality of service, and lets more people broadly searching the Web to discover your resources. For more information prior to the WiLS Hour check out this OCLC web page: http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/registry/default.htm
