month from 10:30-11:30.
________
May 13, 2008: Authorities and Identities
with Victor Gorodinsky and Jane Richard
In this session designed mainly for catalogers, NOT just authoritarians, Victor Gorodinsky, cataloger at UW-Madison Memorial Library, will give a whirlwind tour of authorities, authority records, and authority control. The session will include information on how to search for authority records and how to interpret them. In addition, Victor will give an overview of how he establishes new authorities as a cataloger at a NACO- and SACO-certified institution. Questions and participation are highly encouraged.
In the second part of the session, we'll show how good authority control helps patrons. We'll also look at how authorities, in combination with FRBR concepts, have been leveraged for use in the innovative new project, WorldCat Identities.
Read more about Authorities in this USM Libraries tutorial and more about WorldCat Identities on the OCLC website.

March 11, 2008:
Local Holdings Offline Product (formerly known as SULOP)
with Jane and Nichole (view recording)
For libraries entering local holdings data manually through the Connexion browser interface, or who have or will submit their MFHDs to OCLC for an automated batchload to WorldCat. Individual libraries can order a tab delimited file of all of the local holdings they currently have in WorldCat. Once produced, the tab delimited file will be available for download and can be imported into a spreadsheet package. There is no charge for this report.
At this session, we’ll look at the order process and an actual file and how to manipulate it, along with how libraries might use this information. If time allows, we'll also look at local holdings records themselves and give an overview of how to maintain.
A Quick Reference guide is available online at www.oclc.org/us/en/support/documentation/localholdings/offlineproduct/lhm_offlineproduct_quickref.pdf and covers the order process, how to download the file, and information on how to import the file into Microsoft Office Excel.
________
February 12, 2008: Working With Local Files in the Connexion Client
with Nichole Fromm, see Nichole's slides or video recording view with IE.
Local files can be used to save bibliographic and authority records, to
create and store bibliographic and authority constant data, to set
actions on records, and enter searches for batch processing. Local files
are located on one workstation or can be located on a network drive for
shared access. Effective use of local files can increase the efficiency
of just about any cataloging workflow.
In this session, we'll cover:
• Creating and deleting local files
• Configuring and using batch processes
• Exporting records from a local file
• Backing up and restoring data
• Basic troubleshooting
