Billing Tip of the Month Libraries that run their budgets on the calendar year or only paid for six months of OCLC Service so far in FY11, need to take a look at the balances in your WiLS/OCLC Deposit Account to determine if and how much of a replenishment you need to cover expenses for the next six or twelve months.
I will email OCLC Billing Contacts whose accounts have gone below a zero balance or are getting close, first, and there are a few of those this month. After that, I will look at all calendar year libraries' account balances. This is a repeat of what I reported last month, but don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you!
Again, feel free to email me with questions about your replenishment amount or your actual replenish requests at schenning@wils.wisc.edu. Remember, anyone depositing funds that cover 12 months of OCLC services, will receive a prepayment bonus based on a percentage of current interest rates. Shirley Schenning

The Wisconsin Historical Society map and atlas collection goes online
|
WHS has a collection of more than 25,000 maps and atlases, and thanks to a grant from the Caxambas Fountation, the first batch of 500 of them has been published online. Until recently, users could only identify these in a card catalog at the Society headquarters in Madison, or specialized indexes. Beside digitizing separately issued maps, the new pages link to hundreds of Wisconsin maps that appeared only in rare books or in the "Wisconsin Magazine of History." The pages also provide access to the original General Land Office surveyors' notebooks and plats for Wisconsin and the 1940 Bordner statewide survey of land use.
WHS uses ContentDM to manage its online digital collections.

Dogs of Wisconsin Libraries Dog of the Month
The Dog of the Month is Tippy, a Cocker Spaniel and Miniature Poodle mix who is the family dog of Lisa Marten, our most valued Coop Student Program Assistant. Lisa writes "Tippy is one of my favorite parts of going home. He loves snuggling up and keeping me company. He's extremely spoiled, but only because I love him so much. He's the best dog I've ever had. Some of Tippy's hobbies include: Sleeping on top of couches; Trying to dig holes in beds; Running from the kitchen to the couch and jumping off the couch and running back into the kitchen and running back to the couch and so on. Tippy has multiple personalities. When his hair is long and curly, he's very chill and relaxed. When his hair is cut short, he's zippy and snarky."

OCLC News
OCLC to hold prices flat for 2012 fiscal year To the OCLC Membership:
I want you to know that OCLC will again hold the line on pricing for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 2011. This will be the third consecutive year that OCLC has held prices flat.
This action was supported by the Board of Trustees during its meeting earlier this month. Both the Board and the management team agree that this decision reflects the values of a cooperative, acting in the best interests of its members and participants during a time of economic stress. It is equally clear that on behalf of its members OCLC must pursue its public purposes vigorously. We must continue to promote innovation and invest in developing services to control costs for libraries. In particular, as OCLC delivers Web-scale services, libraries will be able to optimize workflows and take full advantage of the technologies that the Web and cloud computing offer. The scale of the investments to launch these solutions rivals any development effort that the cooperative has undertaken in its 44 year history.
Investments in research and advocacy programs will also remain central to our plans. Already this year, significant studies have been released by OCLC Research, including, Cloud-sourcing Research Collections: Managing Print in the Mass-digitized Library Environment, which examines the feasibility of outsourcing management of low-use print books held in academic libraries to shared service providers. The latest OCLC membership report, Perceptions of Libraries, 2010: Context and Community, was released last month and offers new insights into information consumers and their online information seeking behaviors. OCLC's investments in research on behalf of its members will continue in 2012 and beyond to support and advance libraries and their work.
Frankly, I must temper the good news by noting that in the future OCLC will not be able to absorb inflation year after year without passing through some of those costs to participating institutions. While our balance sheet and cash flows are sound, we must manage costs very strictly to maintain good financial health and advance the cooperative into the next generation.
OCLC members have been through many up and down economic cycles during the past four decades, but the members always have chosen to sustain the cooperative to advance OCLC's public purpose. In that spirit, the promise of Web-scale Management Services bodes well for OCLC's capacity long into the future to deliver information to people across the world when and where they need it. Toward that end, we will continue to do everything we can to control costs and add value. We look forward to working with you to achieve the vision set out by Fred Kilgour almost 50 years ago.
- Jay Jordan
OCLC President and CEO

New Geek the Library Report Provides Encouraging Results
New Geek the Library Report Provides Encouraging Results A new OCLC membership report, Geek the Library: A Community Awareness Campaign, provides the complete story, from what inspired and informed campaign development to detailed insights about the results of the pilot conducted in partnership with nearly 100 libraries in Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and the Milwaukee Public Library.
The overall finding of the report: Geek the Library works! The campaign gets people talking about libraries, and helps libraries connect with their communities and start important funding conversations.
The report asserts that the campaign not only grabs residents' attention, but that it helps change public perceptions about the library, librarians and public library funding. It includes comprehensive analysis of data compiled from quantitative research conducted before the start of the pilot campaign and after several months of running the campaign. These findings provide a detailed overview of the campaign's effectiveness.
Geek the Library made impressive impact, and heightened awareness about the value of libraries and public library funding. Exposure to the campaign, through advertising, public relations and other communication vehicles, led many residents to take positive action in support of public libraries. Many residents surveyed for the study said they had or would visit the library or library Web site, visit geekthelibrary.org, talk to family and friends about the library or about the campaign, and some were now more likely to vote for a library referendum.
The report is not just about the numbers. This report is full of interesting examples of the creative ways pilot libraries implemented the pilot campaign locally.
Download the report for free and find out how you can implement Geek the Library in your community at get.geekthelibrary.org.

3 OCLC staff publish notable library-related books, including past WiLS presenter Karen Coombs
You may have heard Karen Coombs present on OCLC web services last spring at WiLS' Open Solutions. If you are missing your open source fix these days, look no further than Coombs' recently published book Open Source Web Applications for Libraries, together with Amanda J. Hollister of Broome Community College. The book gives guidance on how to use, install and configure popular resources such as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and MediaWiki. Written from a working librarian-in-the-field perspective, they also cover library-specific open source applications such as SubjectsPlus, Blacklight, VuFind, and SOPAC. As open source software and web applications become even more ubiquitous in libraries, having a dependable guide such as this will be even more important for both veteran and new librarians. The book is published by Information Today in a softcover edition, and is also available on Amazon.
