New at WiLS

WiLS Welcomes Research Intern

Jen Champoux started at WiLS in early November with a 1-year appointment. She graduated from UW-Madison in spring 2009, and has worked at the Wisconsin's Water Library, MERIT (aka UW-Madison Educational Sciences), and the Wisconsin Historical Society. She grew up in Nebraska so she can appreciate cold winters, college football, and adding cheese to every meal! Jen will be learning more about the WiLS family of libraries as we develop our Level One services. She also has the dubious task of helping us manage our own projects.

Billing Tip of the Month

Happy 2010! With the change of the calendar year, it is time for libraries whose budget run on the calendar year (mostly public libraries) to replenish their deposit accounts, if needed. I have invoiced a few libraries that were running low or made a replenish invoice request. If you have not heard from me, please take a look at the balance in your account and email me to request your 2010 replenish invoice.

Wisconsin Heritage Online Update

Wisconsin Heritage Online continues to add new members interested in digitization training supported by our grant from the Nicholas Family Foundation. Recent additions to the WHO member rolls include the Richland County History Room (Brewer Public Library, Richland Center), the Portage Historical Society, the Hales Corners Historical Society, and the Langlade County Historical Society (Antigo).

In December, the South Wood County Historical Corporation in Wisconsin Rapids became the first WHO member to successfully complete a digital project under the Nicholas Training Grant. 148 photographs by Lawrence Oliver of Vesper, Wisconsin depicting farm and family life in the 1940s and 50s are now online in a CONTENTdm collection hosted by the Milwaukee Public Library.

Dogs of Wisconsin Libraries Dog of the Month
Pancho

The Dog of the Month is Pancho, a rescued Chihuahua, who's companion, Henry Thompson works in Technical Services at UW-Madison's Memorial Library. He says that Pancho, who weighs less than ten pounds was bald, nervous, and very meek when he came to live with them, but just six months later he had a full, beautiful coat and his sassy nature had come out. "We don't know how we got by without him!"

Nook

New eReaders from Barnes & Noble and Sony were released just in time for the holiday season, so more book consumers are going digital. While industry analysts anticipate that this year's hot gift will translate to increased revenues for retailers, it may also be a boon for library circulation.

"A greater variety of electronic readers available to consumers creates a tremendous opportunity for libraries," says Chip Nilges, OCLC Vice President, Business Development. "By offering popular downloadable eContent that can be read on portable devices, such as the nook and the Daily Edition, libraries can quickly adapt to market conditions and meet the changing needs of their users."

OCLC NetLibrary, the leading provider of eContent solutions for libraries, currently offers more than 140,000 PDF titles that are compatible with the Barnes & Noble nook, Sony's Daily Edition and other devices, including all four Sony Digital Readers (PRS-300, 505, 600 and 700BC), as well as the COOL-ER. Titles available in the NetLibrary catalog include current bestsellers, award-winners and timeless classics, and cover subject categories ranging from fiction to business to personal growth and more.

The New OCLC ILL Policies Directory

The new version of the OCLC Policies Directory has recently been completely redesigned. Released on January 10, 2010, the changes include a new user interface, hardware platform and underlying database. All existing policies, deflections, and contact data remain the same. The new interface is based on feedback received during usability testing with existing users. In addition, WorldCat Registry data is now incorporated into the Policies Directory interface.

The Feb. 9th, 2010 WiLSHour on the new ILL Policies Directory has now been cancelled. Instead sign up today for a live OCLC Web session and learn some practical examples how to best use the service. These OCLC Web seminars are no-cost, live presentations viewable via the Web with audio provided by WebEx.

Wednesday Feb. 3, 8:00am - 9:00am Central Time, Register >>

Thursday Feb. 11, noon - 1:00pm Central Time, Register >>

Why use the Policies Directory?
The Policies Directory is your source for detailed lending information that will help improve users' chances of obtaining requested materials. You can review the lending and copying policies of other libraries participating in WorldCat Resource Sharing, as well as borrowing and lending contact information. Use this information to choose potential lenders, publish your own policies in the Web-based Directory, and reduce the number of unfillable requests you receive. The Policies Directory also allows you to deflect requests that you cannot fill so that they will bypass your library and reduce processing time.

Update your Policies Directory, or WorldCat Registry, set your rules for request, and start saving time today!

WorldCat Local Web Information Sessions
WorldCat Local is the single search that connects people to all your library's materials—physical, electronic and digital—as well as to the delivery services that get them what they need. Built on decades of work done by member libraries worldwide, WorldCat Local helps your users discover unique local resources alongside those of the entire OCLC cooperative, delivered in a single, integrated set of results.

With WorldCat Local, your library also gains Web visibility through OCLC's partnerships with leading search engines (such as Google and Yahoo!), social networking services and other popular sites.

Recent enhancements expand the reach of WorldCat Local searches to include articles indexed in JSTOR, SCOPUS and Science Direct plus remotely indexed resources from a growing number of popular content providers.

Learn how your library can offer single-search access to your print, electronic and digital resources through WorldCat Local at one of the upcoming Web information sessions:

  • Single-search access to your library's collections through WorldCat Local. This program provides an overview of how WorldCat Local addresses common challenges that face today's libraries.
  • WorldCat Local "quick start" introductory webinar. Libraries with holdings in WorldCat and a subscription to WorldCat on FirstSearch can take the first step toward WorldCat Local at no additional charge by implementing WorldCat Local "quick start." This program provides an overview of WorldCat Local "quick start" and how it can benefit your library.
