Racine Public Library and Racine Unified School District help students read 1 million books The new Racine Reads program challenged kindergarten through fifth-grade students at public and private schools to read 1 million books between October and May. Students met that goal, reaching the 1 million mark about four months ahead of schedule. Celebrations of the now-achieved goal, both in schools and also around the community, are well-deserved, according to Jessica MacPhail, Racine Public Library director. "This is a culmination of weeks of planning, hundreds of hours of work," she said. "I'm so proud of everybody who worked so hard behind the scenes to make this happen but I've got to take my hat off to these students." Read more>> UW-Madison Reference Retreat Archive

The dog of the month is Gracie, who is one of the companions of Laura Hummer who is the Associate for Library Services at Nashotah House Seminary. Laura writes, "Squirrel—that is the only word that I know for sure Gracie understands! She spends her days going from window to window watching the squirrels in our yard. There is nothing more exciting for her than being let out to chase one off our patio table. The only other thing she loves as much is lying on top of the heat vent in our foyer. She hears the heat come on and runs to that spot and throws herself down on top of it and doesn't get up until the heat shuts off."

The New Berlin Historical Society's digital collection is one of February's CONTENTdm Featured Collections from OCLC. The Society partnered with Wisconsin Heritage Online to digitize a collection of glass slides from the Swartz family, whose large progressive farm was located in the northeast corner of New Berlin, in Waukesha County. Many photographs were taken at the Swartz's Cornfalfa Farm to document best practices as the farm rose to prominence in Wisconsin and beyond.
On February 1, as part of a national celebration, the Wisconsin education community highlighted digital practices that can make learning more personalized and engaging for students. Schools around the state sponsored a variety of events to encourage students and teachers to engage with digital learning tools and technologies. More information about the Digital Learning Day events and links to further resources are available from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
This eight-week online workshop offered by the UW-Milwaukee School of Information Studies (SOIS) provides a substantial introduction to creating and managing descriptive metadata for digital collections in libraries, archives, and museums. The course begins March 26, 2012.
