Billing Tips of the Month

FY11 Deposit Account Replenishments

With the start of Fiscal Year 2011 on July 1, 2010, it is time for deposit accounts to be replenished for the next six or twelve months, if needed. I have been issuing replenish invoices as the requests have come in, and plan to contact those institutions I haven't yet heard from, in the next few weeks. Please login and check your balances, as several accounts have dipped into negative numbers, with the posting of FY11 Level 1 & 2 WiLS Membership and WorldCat Group invoices. As always, feel free to email or call in replenish requests to me at any time.

Prepayment Bonus

If your fiscal year replenishment covers 100% of your estimated WiLS/OCLC Services for the year and is received by September 30, 2010, WiLS will credit back a prepayment bonus of 0.78% of the balance in your account, when the annual deposit is posted. Prepayment bonuses are based on a percentage of the prevailing interest rates and is calculated twice each fiscal year. First, in July for fiscal year replenishments and again in January for calendar year replenishments.

AskAway Billing for Calendar Years 2010 and 2011

A Reminder to Public Library Systems: Due to DPI covering the AskAway costs for all Wisconsin Public Library Systems for 2010, systems were not and will not be billed individually by WiLS this year. It is our understanding that this will continue for 2011. Academic libraries that subscribe to AskAway were invoiced by WiLS in January 2010 and will be invoiced again in January 2011 at the same subscription price.

Trials for Academic Libraries coming in September

In mid-September, WiLS will offer trials of a variety of databases. Is there a database you're interested in trialing and think others might be interested? If so, please send an email to Kirsten at khoutman at wils.wisc.edu and she'll add it to her list.

Cheryl Bradley Retiring

WiLS Cooperative Purchasing Manager Cheryl Bradley, will be retiring in August after 35 years of state service. With 21 years at WiLS, Cheryl served as Business Manager for many years and was instrumental in expanding the Cooperative Purchasing Program from Tattletapes and CD-Rom Drives to the 3500 databases and products the program offers today.

Cheryl Bradley

Cheryl has big plans for retirement which include sleeping in, honing her hang-gliding skills, volunteering, and traveling. Don't be surprised if she turns up at the annual WEMTA conference in March.

We will miss Cheryl dearly and thank her for her dedication to the Cooperative Purchasing Program and our member libraries.

Public and K12 libraries can contact Sara Gold at sgold@wils.wisc.edu with questions or concerns.

Academic libraries can contact Kirsten Houtman at khoutman@wils.wisc.edu with questions or concerns.

New OCLC Report, Greening Interlibrary Loan Practices

This report details the findings from an OCLC Research-sponsored study of the environmental impact of current interlibrary loan practices, as well as recommended practices for reducing the carbon footprint of resource sharing operations worldwide.

OCLC Research commissioned a study of current interlibrary loan (ILL) practices by California Environmental Associates, a firm of environmental impact consultants. Utilizing data provided by OCLC and gathered during interviews with staff at a dozen US libraries, the consultants correlated specific interlending practices with measurable impacts on greenhouse gas emission levels. These findings, along with key recommendations and best practices, are included in the report.

This information was also covered in a Greening ILL webinar on 6 May 2010, a recording of which is available on the OCLC Research Web site and in iTunes. More information

New to WHO Blanchardville Historical Society

Volunteers at the Blanchardville Historical Society have scanned and cataloged two popular local history books published by the Blanchardville Woman's Club. Each book features a range of local topics contributed by community members, painting a picture of community life in Blanchardville from the 1840s up to the 1980s.

Museum Exhibit Highlights WHO Collection

On July 14, Milwaukee's Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum opened the exhibition Cyril Colnik: A New Look, featuring original drawings and blueprints by Cyril Colnik, Milwaukee's famed master blacksmith. Minitex representative in OCLC Americas Regional Council

Minitex is pleased to share the news that Wilbur Stolt, Director of the University of North Dakota Libraries, has been elected to a three year term as an OCLC Americas Regional Council (ARC) Delegate to the OCLC Global Council!

As such, he will represent the interests of OCLC members in the Americas and, in particular, those of us in the Minitex region, to the OCLC global governance body that was formed a year ago. Judging from his previous activity as Minitex Delegate to the OCLC Members Council, ARC's predecessor, we know that Wilbur will ably advocate for libraries in our region and especially for the needs of smaller libraries.

Congratulations, Wilbur!
