WiLS Furlough Days
WiLS, along with other university and government employees, must take 8 furlough days this year. Because we live on the Madison campus, we must follow the UW-Madison established dates when the campus will be closed. These dates are November 27, December 30, April 2 and May 21. In addition, the WiLS office will be closed on December 23 and January 4. The remaining two days will be taken at individual discretion and will not affect WiLS services.
Another Successful WiLSWorld
Thank you to everyone who attended the July 2009 WiLSWorld. I think we can truly say a good time was had by all. Although attendance was somewhat lower than previous years, there was a solid mix of library types represented (more public library people than ever before), and hallway chatter indicated that most people found the programs to be interesting and informative. We also had some lively conversations at the WiLS Member Breakfast focusing on the new WiLS services, and in particular about how to shape a Business Intelligence service. Input covered a wide range of ideas and suggestions. We will be moving forward in this area through a Development Partnership with Lyrasis.

Convenience Services from WiLS
...And Would You Like Fries With That?
Well, WiLS isn't exactly in the fast food business, but there is a wide range of services available to Level 1 Members, some facets of which you may not be aware of.
Having trouble remembering how to set-up Deflections, editing Constant Data Records, creating Custom Holdings Groups/Borrowing Paths, going Non-Lender, etc...? (I know I do.) WiLS can certainly give you all the information you need to carry out these tasks, or if time is of the essence, we can often do these tasks for you! We can log into OCLC as your institution, and do for you what needs to be done.
Just think of us the next time you're in the Drive-Through at McDonald's.

Billing Tips from Shirley Schenning
• Fiscal Year 2010 OCLC pricing is now in effect, and as of July 1, 2009, WiLS is no longer surcharging OCLC products. Individual institutions were emailed subscription quotes in the form of a WiLS/OCLC FY10 estimate in March. Please review your July OCLC Cataloging, ILL and Access monthly charges and compare them to the annual FY10 quote, and promptly report any discrepancies.
• For all other OCLC products, the FY10 OCLC Price List can be found on the WiLS Website, or by logging into your OCLC Online Service Center Account.
• If your WiLS/OCLC deposit account has gone negative this month, you should have already heard from me. If not, feel free to email me your replenish invoice request.
To streamline the annual invoice process, WiLS will withdraw all of the items listed below from your WiLS Deposit account (if applicable to your library), unless specific requests are on file to invoice items separately. If any of these items are paid by another department, please print the invoice from your online My WiLS Account and have them remit a replenishment to WiLS based on that invoice.
Annually
July or August 2009 - Items that run annually from July 1-June 30
• WiLS Memberships for all (Levels 1 and 2) EXCEPT Level 3 K12 schools.
• WorldCat and BadgerCat
• Wisconsin Heritage Online donations
September 2009: Level 3 Memberships for K12 schools that run annually from September 1-August 31
January 2010: Items that run annually from January 1-December 31
• AskAway
• WAICU
• SPARC
Monthly
• OCLC Billing: WiLS receives a billing file from OCLC on the 3rd business day of the month and then processes and posts the billing to My WiLS Account between the 5th and the 10th of the month. The WiLS billing contact at your library receives an email notice.
• WiLS ILL: Invoices, delayed by 2 months (e.g., March usage is billed in May), are typically posted by the 15th of each month.
As Requested
Registration fees for WiLS conferences and events are invoiced, upon request, from your WiLS Deposit Account.

OCLC-MARC Format Update 2009
On August 16, 2009, OCLC implemented the changes related to the OCLC-MARC Bibliographic, Authority, and Holdings Formats Update 2009. This included MARC 21 Updates No. 8 (October 2007) and No. 9 (October 2008), MARC Code List changes since July 2008, and user and OCLC staff suggestions, now available in OCLC Technical Bulletin 257.
Among the points of interest:
- Defining Videorecording 007/04 (subfield $e) code "s" for Blu-ray Discs.
- Linking ISSNs (ISSN-L) in bibliographic, authority, and holdings fields 022.
- Changing field 041 to separately subfield subtitles/captions for moving images (subfield $j).
- Validating codes for subfield $2 in field 047 (musical form) and 048 (medium of performance) for the respective code lists maintained by IAML (International Association of Music Libraries).
- Implementing two new Dewey fields: 083 (Additional Dewey Decimal Classification Number) and 085 (Synthesized Classification Number Components).
- Implementing the repeatable 260 field.
- Making field 440 obsolete and converting appropriate 4XX/8XX combinations (the definition of 490 1 will change from "Series traced differently" to "Series traced.")
- Defining new subfields in field 502 for dissertation details (degree, school, date, etc.).
- Implementing new field 542 for Information Relating to Copyright Status.
- Implementing subfield $0 (zero) for the Authority Record Control Number in 28 bibliographic fields and three authority fields.
Did you miss ALA Annual in Chicago this summer?
See some of the sessions archived on the OCLC website: www.oclc.org/us/en/news/events/presentations/default.htm
The recordings include:
- Best Practices in Virtual Reference
- Integrating Technical Services and Preservation Workflows: Mainstreaming Digital Resources
And, Jane's personal favorite,
- Redesigning Technical Services Workflows, especially the 3rd and 4th speakers:
- At about 27 minutes into the recording: "The Only Constant is Change: Redesigning Technical Services Workflow," by Arlene Klair, University of Maryland. She is a strong proponent of shelf-ready material. They opted for getting materials to patrons faster than processing in-house, even though that was cheaper.
- At about 1 hour and 8 minutes into the recording: "Retooling Technical Services for a Radically New Reality," by Rick Anderson, University of Utah. He plainly says ACCEPT SHELF READY materials- duplicate call numbers do not matter to patrons (nor does it confuse them). U of U consolidated Acquisitions and Cataloging and changed their attitude to the OPAC, which he maintains is not a good discovery tool (too small a world when the whole universe is available). He has strong opinions on serials (no check-in, binding or claiming), and advocates using ILL requests as a collection development tool: buy it, don't borrow it.
Expert Community Experiment
August 15th marked the end of the six-month Expert Community Experiment. OCLC is very pleased with the results of the experiment. A quick summary of the statistics for February 15 through August 15:
- Expert Community Experiment replaces: 108,766
- Number of institutions participating: 1,690 did at least one replace during the experiment with 368 institutions having activity each month.
The functionality that was implemented for the experiment will remain available for your continued use. OCLC will complete the evaluation (including potential credits) and prepare for a wrap-up webinar that is planned for the latter half of September. Stay tuned.
WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway
OCLC has released the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway, a new service that helps libraries and other institutions maximize the visibility of unique primary source materials, such as digital photos, newspapers, letters and diaries, through WorldCat on the Web.
See the details on the main product page: www.oclc.org/gateway
Single-search access to OCLC electronic resources
Users of WorldCat.org, WorldCat Local and WorldCat Local "quick start" can now search all OCLC electronic resource services from directly within those applications. This upgrade is available to subscribing libraries at no additional charge, and will improve the discovery experience for OCLC resources across the board. Through the simple WorldCat search box users now can retrieve integrated results that include items from OCLC FirstSearch, NetLibrary, Electronic Collections Online journals, ArchiveGrid and CAMIO (the Catalog of Art Museum Images Online). To make sure you get the most from these enhancements, a new WorldCat URL specific to your library has already been created. Log on to the new Service Configuration module to review your library’s URL and customize your site with library-specific branding.
