Changing of the Guard
 |
Two long-time members of the Wisconsin interlibary loan community, Randy Hoelzen from UW-LaCrosse and Erin Czech from UW-Oshkosh, have recently retired.
I have dealt with both of them over the years and have been impressed by their dedication to providing the best possible service to their patrons.
They will be missed. |
Randy began his career at UW-LaCrosse twenty-two years ago working in library instruction. At his retirement he was both head of reference and also supervisor of interlibrary loan. Being a long-time fan of the Saint Louis Cardinals, his retirement gift from the staff was a Cardinals Jersey bearing the words "22-Hoelzen". Randy's replacement will be Bill Doering, Systems, Catalog & Digital Initiatives Librarian at UW-LaCrosse.
Erin Czech has been in charge of interlibrary loan since she began working at UW-Oshkosh's Polk Library in 1977. Erin has two children, a daughter and a son, who are graduates of UW-Eau Claire. Besides visiting her children more often, Erin and her husband plan on doing a lot of camping. Erin's replacement will be Sara Stichert.
Happy retirement!

ILLiad Custom Reports with Microsoft Office
WiLS is happy to announce that Atlas Systems will be providing the opportunity for ILLiad custom reports training this summer as so many of you have requested. Atlas will be handling all the training sessions in a webinar format and will provide 3 months of archiving the sessions so that your institution will be able to access them at a later date if you are unable to attend the live sessions.
The three concurrent sessions will be $250 for all three sessions no matter your current WiLS service level. If at a later date you feel that you need supplemental training or you wish for WiLS to take on ILLiad reports for your institution, we can certainly work to achieve either of these goals of our service level one members.
For more detailed information on the sessions, go to:
Atlas's web page. A registration link should be available this summer.
October 5, 2010 — WiLS Annual ILL Meeting

The Reference and Loan Library has a New Name!
The Reference and Loan Library has a new name!
The Reference and Loan Library changed its name with the launch of a new website describing its services. The new name is Resources for Libraries & Lifelong Learning or RL&LL for short.
The name change reflects the overall shift in priorities and services. Over the last decade, the emphasis on use of technology to provide online statewide resources and services has required a larger portion of staff time and resources.
The home page features the primary online resources/projects from RL&LL. These resources are available to all Wisconsin library staff and users and can be accessed by residents from any computer with web access. Primary online resources include AskAway, BadgerLink, WISCAT and Wisconsin Government Documents. The website will provide guidance on finding information and seeking help in using online resources and identifying core materials in the print and audiovisual collections.
RL&LL staff invites you to try out the new website.
If there is other information you wish had been included in the re-design, please contact Sally Drew at sally.drew@dpi.wi.gov or by phone at 608-224-6161.

WiLS ILL Assessment Service Off and Running
In late May, WiLS worked with UW-Milwaukee to pilot the new ILL Assessment service. This pilot began with a simple need to look at ILL services staffing, workflow, and financial health. WiLS staff has developed an efficient service that will provide a clear assessment, not only about the current structure of your ILL service, but about the state of your ILL infrastructure and whether it can sustain predicted changes in the future.
In a matter of weeks WiLS ILL staff organized the pilot with Milwaukee. We began by setting up a detailed "goals and expectations" document that both groups agreed upon as the basis of an assessment. From there UW-Milwaukee completed a pre-site visit survey about the basic structure of Milwaukee's ILL service. WiLS ILL staff then visited UW-Milwaukee to discuss the follow topics: staffing, ILL budget, software and automation, use of consortial borrowing and document delivery services, copyright and licensing, patron service priorities, and future service possibilities. A formal report will be presented to the UW-Milwaukee staff and administration in a few weeks.
We hope that our Level One members will make use of this new service in the coming year since we feel it will not only shed light on the pros and cons of your current service, but it will provide excellent data about possibilities for your service in the future.

ILLiad 8 Addons
ILLiad 8 still seems to be a daunting, little used application nationally. WiLS' ILL staff have been one of the reluctant ones to fully adopt it — until now. The light bulb that recently turned on for us about why it is an amazing ILL tool was the addition of what is called "addons".
"Addons", a term used in the gaming world, is an application that is produced by a community of software users to provide a customized enhancement for their own use of the software. This means that those of us who have been using ILLiad 8 for some time now have started to create tabs within the software to automatically search requests against our own OPAC, Google, Amazon, and future resources like Forward for the UW System.
ILLiad 8 "addons" automate a very time intensive step in the ILLiad workflow. To give you a sense of how this looks within ILLiad 8, please see this very short video. (There is no sound to it)
Please let us know if you would like us to help you develop addons for your institution.
